Watchers

My studio, MAW Productions post tutorials on different aspects of comic book art and production design. We just released a new tutorial Today and this is a great one.

This tutorial is about translating a comic script to pencils. I kinda go into detail about the ins and outs of my penciling process. So, I hope you get something from it.

Here's a preview.

Tutorial 7: From Script to Pencils
From the art table of Martheus Wade

I want to begin this tutorial by saying that there is no set way to translate a script to pencils. These tutorials are always from our personal process and should be used to create your own. With that said, here is how I translate a script into penciled work.

Step 1: Read the Script
I know you may get a laugh out of that. But that is the first step in the creation process. I like to take the script and read it through from beginning to end once. In this first read, I try to collect as much information I can about the characters and story without concern about the visual nature of what I am reading. (Side Note: Every time you read a piece of narrative, you will get visual representations of what you are reading. However, at this stage, I'm not trying to categorize them at all.)

ABOUT JETTA: TALES OF THE TOSHIGAWA

Overview

The graphic novel is about a young Japanese woman, Shiandrea Toshigawa, born into the Toshigawa ninja clan. She is trapped between her wish to live a normal life and her destiny to be the chosen one of the ninja clan. The story delves into Japanese culture and lore, while also maintaining all of the modernities of a near future world, which is when the story takes place.

Character Biography

Shianndrea (Jetta) is a young Japanese woman brought up into the Toshigawa ninja clan. In its history, the clan had a severe struggle with the Knave, an organization bent on bringing evil together to unite the world. At the end of feudalism the Knave was defeated by Yamoto Toshigawa. However, legend foretold that one day a descendant of Yamoto Toshigawa, would be destined to once again defeat the Knave when they rise once again. When the Toshigawa are attacked by Terminus and the Knave, she realizes the prophesy was meant for her.

Divided now between her loyalty towards her clan and her own desires, Jetta discovers that fighting her own destiny may be harder than answering to it.

Sadly no, it is " resin model kits", a pre existing figure, my only job is preparation, pinning, assembly, coating and painting. :/
